Biopitch current trainer/coach, Jose Lopez was added to the Cincinnati Reds 40 man roster Monday evening. Jose is a former participant of our Velocity Development and Arm Care Program, subsequently gaining 9mph on his fastball, procuring a baseball scholarship to attend Seton Hall University and later becoming a 6th Round draft pick.
The 24-year-old Lopez was probably the best Reds minor-league starter who didn't reach the majors in 2017. In most years he would be a lock for the Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award thanks to his 2.57 ERA in 147.0 innings between Daytona and Pensacola. The Reds right hander had 49 walks and 143 strikeouts in that span, and performed better in Double-A than he did in Advanced-A. Lopez will be ineligible to be picked during the Rule 5 draft now that he's on the 40-man roster. Lopez started the season strong at High-A Daytona and earned a promotion to Double-A Pensacola in May. Between the two he pitched in 26 games (147 innings) and threw for a 2.57 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.
